Drawing on more than five thousand patient stories, Dr. Gupta explains why obesity is a health problem before it is a weight problem, and what actually reverses it. Twenty-seven chapters, grounded in clinical practice.
Most weight-loss advice starts from the wrong premise: that the number on the scale is the problem to solve. Dr. Sandeep Gupta’s forthcoming book argues otherwise. Weight loss and health are not the same goal, and treating them as interchangeable has left millions of people chasing a number while the underlying disease, obesity as a chronic endocrine and metabolic condition, goes largely unaddressed.
A number on a screen has never cured a single disease. It’s time we stopped treating it like medicine.
Drawing on more than 5,000 patients treated through Welltopia’s Lifestyle Disease Unit since 2019, the book makes the case that standard BMI cutoffs, calibrated on Western populations, systematically miss a substantial share of Indian patients, and proposes a classification system built specifically around Indian body composition instead. It also draws on the author’s own outcome: a 20 kg loss (84 kg to 64 kg), achieved by testing the protocol on himself before offering it to a single patient. Six years later, his weight remains below 65 kg, a net regain of just 0.8 kg.
I did not write this book from the outside looking in. I wrote it from the inside, looking for a way out.
The book is complete, spanning 27 chapters across the clinical, psychological, and practical dimensions of the condition, and is currently being submitted to literary agents.
Why the number on the scale is the wrong first measurement, and what to track instead.
How metabolism actually slows, speeds up, and resists change — and what that means for treatment.
Moving past calorie counting toward what food actually does inside a body carrying excess weight.
Why exercise, sleep and hormonal balance are treated as one system, not three separate habits.
Composite, anonymised cases that show the reasoning behind the programme, not just its results.
A dedicated look at obesity in women, including menopause and hormone replacement therapy.
The book carries two forewords: one from a fellow physician on the clinical picture, and one from a dietitian on the nutritional side of the same problem.
